Many of us take for granted the safety of our homes from asbestos. Some of us have grown comfortable at home and would never guess there could be potential dangers like asbestos or lead paint lurking behind our walls and under our floorboards. Others assume that since these dangers have been known for decades they must have already been taken care of in our homes. Unfortunately, many homes, especially homes built before the 1980s, still contain potentially harmful asbestos. Here's everything you need to know about detecting and removing asbestos from your home.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is a known carcinogen--meaning it is capable of causing cancer. Asbestos has been utilized throughout history for a number of practical uses, dating back to Ancient Greek and Egyptian societies who used asbestos in the embalming process and in candle wicks. In 1900s America, asbestos was used in a range of industries from automobiles, the military, and in building our homes. The benefits of asbestos are many. It is a great insulator and is also fire retardant. So for homeowners trying to keep warm but also concerned about their house burning down, asbestos offered two highly sought after services. It wasn't until the 1970s that the U.S. government began warning about and regulating the use of asbestos.

Risks

In spite of its many uses, asbestos has one--huge--disadvantage: it causes cancer. More specifically asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma (a cancer of the lining of the chest and abdominal cavity). The cancer is a result of inhaling the fibers of asbestos mineral that are released into the air. In extreme cases where asbestos exposure becomes cancer-causing, some common symptoms include:
  • pain or difficulty breathing
  • coughing blood
  • a cough that doesn't go away or worsens
  • shortness of breath

Detecting asbestos in your home

The ways in which asbestos can make its way into the air are innumerable. Sometimes drilling into a ceiling that is blown with asbestos insulation causes the fibers to fall into the home. However, there are other places asbestos has been used in homes such as in flooring, paint, and wallpaper used around wood-burning stoves. According to the EPA, you generally can't tell if something contains asbestos just by looking at it. If the asbestos containing material is in good condition it is recommended that you leave it alone. However, if you are planning a remodel that will disturb the material (work which involves breaking ceilings, walls, or flooring) it is recommended that you seek out a certified inspector.

Removal or repair?

If an inspector deems part of your home unsafe due to asbestos fibers they will help you determine if the asbestos needs to be removed or simply repaired. In minor cases, a contractor will be able to repair the fix that is causing asbestos fibers in such a way that it doesn't need to be removed entirely. In more severe cases, the asbestos may need to be entirely removed by a contractor. It is important that you don't attempt these repairs or removals yourself as they require safety equipment and precautions that only accredited professionals have access to.

This habit also has the added benefit of bringing your family closer together . Spend time together at home. Whether it’s a weekly game night where your family gathers around the kitchen table to play board games, huddles up in the living room to play some video games or spend the day playing a game of ball in the backyard. Taking time to enjoy each other at home base creates happy memories and helps your family become more tight knit. Create zones in your house. Set up zones for activities such as tech only, homework, play, solo time and even family time to help encourage focus on the activity at hand while maintaining balance. By creating specific zones you help hardwire your family’s brains to focus on the activity at hand and allow a way for other members of the family to respect that person’s time while they are engaging in an activity. Healthy Choices. Set out bowls of fruits, pre-cut veggies to snack on and keep a jug of cold water on hand to guide your family towards healthy choices on their own. This works especially well with younger children so that you can allow them to make their own food choices at snack time and ensure you are making it easier for them to reach for the good stuff. Encourage physical activity. If you child is interested in an afterschool sport, practice being enthusiastic and supportive of their new interest. Spend time practicing with them in the backyard and volunteer to host their friends over for a group practice in the backyard. If your partner is interested in joining the gym or an adult league, leave room in your family’s schedule for them to easily stick to and enjoy their new commitment. Make relaxation easy for your family. Consider what each member of your family’s go-to technique to relax is and set up ways for them to easily do so. If your children love to draw or paint set up an art station they can easily access at their discretion. If your partner enjoys curling up with a good book and some hot tea arrange a bookcase with their favorite titles within reach and keep tea making supplies at the forefront of your cabinet. Get outside. Sometimes it's important to get out of the house too. A few times a month schedule times for family trips to get outside and visit nearby trails. Whether you walk, hike or ride bikes as a family getting outdoors to enjoy fresh air and be active will improve your family’s health and guarantee some quality time together. We all want health and happiness for the ones we love. You can help promote healthy habits that lead to increased happiness for your family with a little preparation and guiding by example. Using harsh chemicals around your home isn’t always the best way to clean. There’s a natural substance that you probably have right in your kitchen that’s perfect to clean the kitchen and every other room of the house. This substance is vinegar. Here, we’ll give you all the ways that you can use vinegar to clean up even the toughest of dirt in and around your home. Bathroom You can pour a cup of vinegar right into the toilet. You can let the vinegar sit overnight. If the toilet is really in bad shape, you can add baking soda or borax to use as an abrasive scrubbing agent. Once you scrub, flush, and notice how clean your toilet is! Vinegar is also great for cleaning the drain in the tub. You can also use vinegar straight or diluted for general cleaning around your sink and shower, as vinegar works wonders on soap scum. One great tip to get rid of hard water is to use vinegar on your shower head. Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and tie it around your shower head so that it is submerged. Let it sit overnight and remove the bag the next morning. Let the water run for a few seconds and you’ll have a much cleaner shower head! Kitchen When you’re working with food, why would you want to use toxic chemicals around the kitchen? You can wipe up spills in your fridge with a mix of water and vinegar. You can also use vinegar to clean countertops, cutting boards, your microwave and plastic containers. Just be sure to rinse everything after you use the vinegar for a cleaning job well done. Bedroom You can actually use vinegar to disinfect your mattress. Create a mix of rubbing alcohol, vinegar and some tea tree oil. Place in a spray bottle and spray on your mattress to help rid your mattress of dust mites, mildew and other odor causing bacteria. Once it dries, vacuum your mattress and it will be like new. Wood Furniture and Hardwood Floors Mix vinegar with olive oil to clean wood. You can add lemon or orange if you’d like a fresh scent. This will help to clean and maintain your wood furniture and floors. Carpets While you need to test your carpet for colorfastness, vinegar is a great substance to condition your carpets. You can mix vinegar with an essential oil for scent and spray on the carpet to get rid of dust mites. Cleaner Laundry Did you know that you can use vinegar as a fabric softener? By adding a cup of vinegar to the last rinse cycle, your clothes will come out soft and clean. These green ideas are perfect for your green home.
